A Walk for a Peanut Latte: Stories Along Jeju’s Coastline

Some days are not about the destination at all—they’re about the gentle surprises waiting along the way.
I set out for a 3-mile walk along Jeju’s coast with one simple goal: to enjoy a peanut latte at Bon Café. The sea air was cool and salty, the kind that carries stories. Along the path, I stopped to read a poem etched into stone—a love poem between a couple—and just beyond it, a sculpture stood tall with the words, “My will, the land of the harbor of dreams.”

Jeju is a place where even the wind tells stories. I thought of the Haenyeo, the remarkable women divers who free-dive into the sea to gather seafood, relying on skill and breath rather than oxygen tanks. Their strength and quiet resilience seem to live in the waves themselves.

When I finally reached Bon Café, I discovered it was closed. My heart sank for a moment—but the universe had other plans. Just next door was a cheerful photo corner filled with quirky decorations and two curious Jeju cats who seemed to pose just for me. 💜

Circling back, I met two Korean women near the front who, after using Papago translation, confirmed that Bon Café was closed for the day. Seeing my disappointment, they insisted I take some fresh Jeju tangerines from a crate they had just opened. They loaded my hands with bright orange fruit and sent me off smiling.

They recommended Lifework Café, and that’s where I finally found the long-awaited peanut latte. It was smooth, nutty, and utterly satisfying—the perfect ending to an unexpected adventure.

Jeju taught me something that day: even when plans change, beauty finds its way in—through kindness, through culture, and through the rhythm of a living seascape. 🌊🍊
